University management organisation

University Board

The University Board is the University’s highest decision-making body. According to the Higher Education Act, the board shall have "supervision over all the university’s affairs, and is responsible that its duties are fulfilled". 7 of the 14 board members represent general interests, including the chairman. In addition there is the Vice-Chancellor, three lecturers and three students as ordinary members. Representatives for employees – three union representatives – have the right to be present and to express opinions at the board’s meetings.
The board meets 6-8 times a year.

Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor makes decisions after reports have been presented in the presence of the Head of Administration and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors and the student representatives. The Vice-Chancellor’s secretary has administrative responsibility for the executive meetings that take place every other Monday at 1 PM.

University management

The operational university management comprises Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Head of Administration. The management also includes three advisers.

Vice-Chancellor’s management council

The job of the Vice-Chancellor’s management council is to provide the Vice-Chancellor with decision-making support and at the same time to be a forum for discussion of future issues and university-wide strategies. Besides the Vice-Chancellor, this includes the Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the Head of Administration and the deans, along with the chief librarian and chairman of the University's student union (GUS).

The management council meets regularly every other Monday morning.

Three committees

The Vice-Chancellor has established three committees with the function of coordinating work on university-wide matters with respect to undergraduate education, postgraduate studies and research, cooperation with trade and industry, and also when necessary to be able to supply the Vice-Chancellor and the board with information of various kinds. The committees are also a way for the faculty representatives to raise common issues. The committees have representatives from all faculty boards, UFL and the students.

The following three bodies serve the same function as the four committees above, but within different areas.

Central Administration

The main task of the Central Administration body is to use its expert knowledge to provide support and service to the University’s management organisation. Urgent matters related to administration regularly entail discussions of synchronisation and direction between the Vice-Chancellor, Head of Administration and concerned administrative departmental heads. These meetings are initiated by the Head of Administration and take place on Mondays in connection with the Vice-Chancellor’s executive meeting.
